Ascenseur pour l'échafaud

My final illustration drawn at Periscope. If you've never seen Louis Malle's Elevator to the Gallows, I suggest you check it out. It's not as good as other film noir/French New Wave films I've seen in my life, but what makes it so unique is the score performed by jazz legend Miles Davis. Among the special features in the Criterion Collection DVD is a small featurette of Davis improvising the score with his trumpet, while watching a scene of Jeanne Moreau wandering through the rain. I was always struck by that moment in the mini-documentary and decided I wanted to draw it.

Thanks to Ben Dewey for the photo reference and his guidance.

Karaoke

I took on Ben Dewey's suggestion and tried to finish this illustration within a day. I was close. I drafted this out for three hours yesterday and finished the entire thing (details and inks) today.

Thanks to Tally Nourigat, Cat Farris and Ron Chan for the photo reference!!

"Sarah goes to a Punk Show"

Here's the six page comic project I've been working on for the past two weeks. It isn't exactly how I envisioned it. I came up with some new ideas along the way and took some elements when they felt unnecessary. To tell the truth, if probably would have liked to take another week to work on these. But during the time I spent at Periscope, I've learned it's best not to spend too long on one thing. Do what you can with it, learn from your mistakes, and move onto the next project. That said, I'm happy with it for the most part. The inspirations that came for it was obviously the Sex Pistols and the Distillers, Jen Van Meter's Hopeless Savages, Bruce Lee, and every music venue I've ever been to in my life.

As Steve Lieber would say, "on to the next drawing." :)

Thanks to Steve, Terri, Ron Chan, Dylan Meconis, Ben Dewey, Jonathan Case, Ron Randall, Colleen Coover for your assistance and your advice!
